Taking Strong Steps Into 2022

Thank you to our investors for your ongoing support and partnership through these times. It’s the start of a new year and a new edition of Perspective.

Omicron realities are casting a shadow over the start of this new year. We’re seeing and hearing about the stresses people are facing on various fronts. I think we’ve learned a few things through this battle with COVID-19. Small actions, for instance, are as meaningful as large initiatives. Empathy and gratitude are fuel for making it through. Consistency—being present today, tomorrow and the day after that—is invaluable.

I want to stop and thank you, our investors, for your ongoing support and partnership through these times. It has meant a great deal to our team as they continue to work for you with unwavering dedication and expertise.

I believe the actions and qualities above form the basis for moving forward in the face of COVID-19 adversity. In this edition of Perspective, you’ll find articles dealing with practical matters and highlights of the future to come. For example, while markets climbed the “wall of worry” in the fourth quarter, Ian Riach highlights how investors drove markets higher, and 2022 return expectations. Read the latest Market Commentary. In Higher Inflation Extends Its Stay, Vincent Tonietto tackles managing portfolios in the current environment and Giles Marshall raises The Growing World Of Digital Ownership. Evolving themes in Canada’s energy sector are front and centre in our RoundTable featuring Les Stelmach, Izabel Flis and Naveed Sunderji. See Canada’s Energy Sector: Investing Through Change.

Whether you’re a trustee, settlor, or beneficiary, you’ll want to read New Trust Reporting Rules: Know What’s Ahead. Thomas Junkin discusses the importance of knowing whether coming tax return filing requirements will affect you in any way.

We look at this new year, knowing we’ve all come through the last 12 months with sorrows and stresses. One way or another, we also welcomed babies, celebrated birthdays, new jobs or simply getting to the end of another week. At Fiduciary Trust Canada, we’ve continued to build on our successful investment management and wealth transfer capabilities. Our job is to help give you the foundation for life today and to reach for tomorrow. We invite you to review 2021 and look ahead, sharing your wishes and plans with your advisors, with us. Whether by phone, Zoom, or in-person, we’re here to help you move forward.
